If you happen to stumble upon a box of the most perfectly sweet melt-on-your-tongue-kind-of-strawberries there is only one appropriate way to serve them. Naked. As they are. Shaken, not rinsed. If you feel the need to pair them up with a friend, a splash of milk or yogurt will do fine. My aunt taught us that. She’s funny, my aunt. I think she wears a different pair of earrings every day of the year. She is really good at throwing tennis balls in a bucket. And she buys at least three boxes of strawberries a day during the summers. She is my strawberry aunt. And what she doesn’t know about strawberries, is not worth knowing.
I’m not sure what she would say about this recipe. She would probably not approve. Because in this milkshake the strawberries don’t play the leading role, they just pop up as a very nice and fruity surprise. No, this is definitively more a recipe for a peanut butter aunt or uncle.
I don’t actually have a peanut butter uncle, but if you have, this is something you want to whip up for him. It’s quick, super scrumptious and only calls for a handful of ingredients.
Two important things to remember:
1. If you are making your own peanut butter (here is a recipe), way to go! If not, make sure to buy a good brand. You only need peanuts and salt to make it. Skip the brands that have more than that in their ingredient list.
2. The two layers is what makes this milkshake special. The balance between the sweet and nutty top layer and the fruity and chunky bottom layer. Respect the layers, don’t just throw all ingredients in the blender.
